I was quite excited to try this place out after reading all the raving reviews written by other users but alas I was fairly disappointed. .. The burgers are pretty average not much different than culvers or winsteads. I do have to agree that the onion rings are fantastic even tho they came out on our order way past over cooked and slightly burnt still some of the best I've ever had I would eat there again if I was in the area but it's definitely not worth a special trip

I love getting their burgers here. They're not greasy, very light (for what it is) and the staff is friendly and nice. I haven't tried their milkshakes though I consisitently hear nothing but good and heavenly things about them. I will have to try them next time I come in.

Very good, greasy spoon type, flat grill burgers. Home made fries that are very thin & cooked perfectly. And battered onion rings. They offer a single, double & a few specialty burgers. Plus a hand breaded pork tenderloin that I CANNOT WAIT to go back for! But being my first time I had to get a burger. The Sassy burger had bacon, cheese, grilled onions & guacamole. It was delish! I got 50/50 O-rings & fries. Plus a root beer whip (blended float) that was made w/ IBC Root Beer. They didn't use all the root beer to make my whip & gave me the bottle still 1/3 full to help wash down my meal. Everything was very good, but just not great. I work near by & will definitely go back regularly when I want a good, greasy burger. But I wouldn't go waaayyyy out of my way seeing as there are so many great burger joints in town. They have a very small patio w/ a window you can order from outside. And there is a nice little park literally next doors. So plenty of options to eat outdoors so you can walk off all those extra calories, lol. Oh ya, they make great milkshakes the only way they should be made, with real ice cream they actually scoop out & milk! Hard to find a milkshake like that nowadays for us milkshake purists, haha. Give the Snack Shack a try!

Small little burger joint in Old Town Overland Park. Service is good and the burgers are solid but the fries are just OK. Everything is made fresh to order so you will wait about 5 minutes to get your food. Well worth a try if you are ever in the area. I recommend the Sassy Burger!

Burgers were good. Kinda like a rich man's Winsteads. Fries pretty good, onion rings suck. Milkshake was pretty good.

Checking out the hamburgers on the KC area. Found this place through Yelp. Ordered hamburgers. French fries and onion rings. Oreo, my dog, is excited! We all liked it, including Oreo! We sat at a picnic table nearby. And there's a park across the street. Oh happy day!

I love this place. The people behind the counter are friendly and seem to enjoy serving their customers. I have only had the burgers here because they are so good I can't bring myself to get something else. Inside is small and basically a lunch counter seating however it is right next to a park so I always sit outside. They have added more seating outside so it is even better.

Locally owned (the owner cooked my burger) with a focus on local ingredients. A friendly and warm staff. this cozy little joint gives you the warm fuzzies from start to finish. The menu is simple and the food is simply great with a truly homemade feel. I have always been kinda "meh" on onion rings. This place made me fall in love. They were better then the fries! I have heard lots of complaints about limited seating and long lines. We had a late lunch (2 pm) on a weekend, so we were in and out...easy breezy. Plus, it is a really cute neighborhood to walk around, which you may need to do after this big burger. If I have any complaints it is that the shake was watery and flavorless and if I am eating in the restaurant, I would love a bigger glass for soda. That is some salty food and I am thirsty! I will be back!

On a cloudy, cold day, I ended up in Overland Park, Kansas after completing some deliveries. Ravished, I decided to go on the hunt for some food and by chance "Snack Shack" appeared out of the corner of my eye. After avoiding a car accident, I parked in the park's parking lot and walked inside. The Snack Shack is a moderately sized restaurant (maybe will seat at max. 30-50 people) that sits adjacent to a park. The decor is comparable to an adolescent's bedroom. Posters, drawings and photographs are carefully framed and mounted on every wall and forgotten vinyl disks are hung from the ceiling. Moreover, popular 90's alternative rock music like, "Walk like an Egyptian," is played in the background. After entering the restaurant, I was greeted by a very friendly waitress and an equally friendly waiter/cook. I quickly decided to order the Sassy Burger and the 50/50. After placing my order and paying for it, I took a seat at one of the many bar stools, which line the walls. Within the next 30 minutes, my food was prepared and ready to be devoured. The Sassy Burger is a fantastic burger with an appropriate name. With swiss, onions, and avocado, a girl like me can feel somewhat healthy when eating a nice piece of meat with strips of bacon. The bun is toasted, leaving an additional crunch when you bite through and the onions are grilled to translucence, not browned(which I like). Moreover, the burger patty reminded me of a steak burger's patty: thin and filled with flavor. Finally, the 50/50 was surprisingly very good. The onion rings are heavily battered, but are cooked correctly. On the other hand, the french fries are very thinly cut. I thought I wasn't going to like them, but they ended up being very good. My only complaint was that I didn't have enough money to try the shakes. From just seeing the machines behind the counter, I know that they don't play when making shakes. Next time, I will definitely get one. ^_^

The PooPoo and I decided to hit Old Town OP tonight and see what looked good. We had noticed Snack Shack on previous trips in the area and decided to make it our destination tonight. We were not disappointed. We each had a burger. She had a cheeseburger with the normal toppings, I had the Sassy burger hold the onions. We also split an order of 50/50 (fries and onion rings.) I enjoyed the Sassy burger. The burger was tasty. It wasn't juicy, but it wasn't dry either. Just a good solid burger. It had Swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce, and avocado (an avocado spread) on it. It was a nice combination of tastes. The lettuce I do not normally like shredded on a burger because it gets messy, but they put the burger together perfectly so it is not a problem. The rings were great. They are large, battered onion rings. I like batter over a breaded ring. They were a bit overcooked for me, but still good. The fries were excellent. A decent size square cut that was perfectly crispy, maybe a touch over cooked, and meaty inside. The service was fantastic. The PooPoo has a fake baby for a school project today and everyone talked to her about it and was very friendly. Luckily, the baby slept during the time we were there, but I have no doubt every one would have been great if there would have been a little outburst. The building is small, with limited seating spots. There is outdoor seating to enjoy on nice days. Don't let the size discourage you, grab a stool or if there isn't room, grab a sandwich to go, it is worth it. Prices are great. We spent around $15 and that included a soda. Menu is really small and simple, but it doesn't need to be more than it is.

Burgers are probably the best burger I've had since moving to the area. The patties have an awesome 'crunch' from the flattop. Buns are super soft but don't fall apart. I seriously dream about these burgers. Fries taste fresh and the onion rings are always on point!

First time I visited this place for dinner was at 6pm on a Tuesday and they were out of food. So tried again a few days later. The place is small and all food is cook to order. I ordered fries and a cheeseburger my father ordered a hamburger and the onion rings. The cheeseburgers are really good except unless they forgot I did not have any seasoning but they were still really good. The fries were almost black and also did not have any salt or seasoning. I ate a few fries and tried one of my dads onion rings. They were really good and new next time to skip the fries and go straight for the onion rings. Over all I liked the food and will go back.

Yum!! Best burgers in the vicinity at least. Bichelmeyers provides their meat and the corn nuggets are pretty darn good too. The staff/owners are super pleasant and gracious too. Great little local joint!!

I came here for lunch since I was in the area. Parking was pretty much whatever you can find in front or around this place, but it wasn't hard to find parking. This place was pretty small and had like those 50's decor to it. There were a little over a handful of people already eating here. I sat and looked at their menu on the wall. The menu was simple so it was somewhat easy to decide what I wanted and their menu was available online as well. I ordered the Sassy Burger ($7.50), Sweet Potato Fries ($3.00), and a soda ($1.00). It took a few minutes before my food was ready and brought over to where I sat. The Sassy Burger was not bad and I liked the avocado in it. It was a little on the greasy side since my burger was dripping but not bad at all. The Sweet Potato Fries were good, but the amount was a lot especially if you're not really into it. I almost didn't want to finish it but figured I'm not usually in this area to eat. If you're a hardcore sweet potato fan, then you will definitely like the Sweet Potato Fries. However, I'm indifferent about it but that was a lot to eat. The price I paid total ($13.05) was a little high for the amount of food but I suppose it was okay this one time. lol While I was eating, I overheard other people talking with the girl who worked there. It sounded like a lot of these are regulars so they knew each others' names. Of course, they could have just met and were making conversation. Since seating was limited, then you will have others sit next to you. That doesn't bother me but it might for others. Overall, I thought this was a good place to grab a quick bite to eat.

Great place with excellent burgers, hot dogs and various sandwiches. I love the onion rings too. If I'm feeling indulgent I'll get a shake, which is super delish! The owners are fantastic and friendly. I always leave happy and satisfied.

This was my first and last visit to Snack Shack. We ordered two burgers, an order of fries, an order of onion rings. We waited 42 minutes for our food and when it did arrive it wasn't hot. Horrible service and mediocre food. Save yourself the time and money, go elsewhere.

My hubby and I ate here for the first time last week. It's a cool tiny place to eat and very friendly. We ate at the bar and could watch them getting our food ready. The burger tasted very fresh and all the ingredients were places perfectly. You know you hate a messy burger. ;) The fries were hot, crispy and flavorful. They are the skinny fries and they won me over. First skinny fries I've ever liked. Our chocolate shakes were perfect. Great food, friendly service.

This little secret is an absolute culinary treasure. The Feisty One told me about this cool place and how fans rave about their burgers and shakes. I had the double-cheeseburger with grilled jalapeños and sweet potato fries. . .wow! Highly recommend this if you want great service from a walk-up counter, clean and fun decor and killer "diners, drive-ins and dives" type place. Food is spot-on.

Another place I've always driven by and seen but just never had a chance to eat there.(I just need to make a list and complete it!). I'm very glad I made the choice to stop in. The service was great and the entire place was clean. I ordered the Bobby with the 50/50(fry/onion rings combo). The burger was awesome! Very good meat and the jalapeños and onions were cooked perfectly. Amazing taste! Just how a burger should be. The fries and onion rings were a generous serving and were made to perfection. I have zero complains. In talking to one of the service people he stated that they've only been around 3 years. However, after you visit, you will think that its been around for years. Great food. Great environment. Great service. Couldn't ask for more. I will definitely be telling my friends and coming back. Go check it out!

Snack Shack is pretty solid. If you're looking for a fresh, hearty no frills burger this is the place to get one. It is tiny, and you feel a little squished if you're sitting at the little sidebar facing the wall between where people are ordering and the door, but I've never had trouble finding a seat. The staff is fast and friendly and they seem to have regulars. All ingredients are FRESH FRESH FRESH. The burger is thick & juicy, not too greasy. Portions are large, fries and o-rings are good and burgers are spot on. Also, the old fashioned milk shakes come in a glass with the extra in the metal shaker on the side, and they are to die for. Perfect little lunch spot.

Decent burgers but the place is pretty small and cramped. It could user a remodel and maybe a fresh coat of paint. Still, the staff is friendly and the service is prompt. This is also a fun place to bring the kids.

We discovered The Snack Shack last year while attending the farmers market. This mom and pop shop offers fantastic food with fast and friendly service. The best burger they offer is the Bobby in my opinion. The menu is good size and offers a variety of shakes as well. This is an absolute must whenever your close to downtown OP....or if your not and just want a burger.

We were desperately searching for a place to get our eat on. I was getting crabby and there wasn't much around. Thankfully, we drove by the Snack Shack and saw a cozy little party going on inside. There were people in the window eating happily and the decor was enticing. After looking it up on Yelp, I decided it would be good. Had to be, otherwise I would have a melt down like a 5 year child. When we walked in, we were greeted and told to take a seat. We opted for the counter area close to the grill. After ordering, we sat down to admire the our new found burger place. I could already tell it was going to be good. It's got a hip vibe without being too cluttered. In way, it reminded me of YJs snack bar in the crossroads, only without the hipster attitude and way better food. We both ordered the sassy burger. That is a bickelmeyers patty, cheese, avocado, bacon, and maybe a type of spicy mayo? The burger was one of the BEST burger's I've ever had. The meat was so tender and juicy, you can most definitely tell it's fresh ground beef. The quality can't be beat. Next time I have a craving for burger and fries, I will come here. This is really a truly good find and I wouldn't have expected it. Although I don't really care for too many people in one place, I feel that I should let everyone know about this. You need to come here and help support this awesome local business.

What got my attention the most was the pumpkin milk shake sign...although I didn't fall to the urge. It sounded yummy and I could see they had a bad ass electric malter, so I assumed it was a handmade milkshake. Their big claim to fame is fresh ground beef daily from Bickelmeyer's. The catch phrase "from pasture to plate" was used. I expected some amazing beefy experience. What I got: The Bobby Burger A pasture to plate burger loaded with jarred or canned jalapenos. Brilliant! NOT! The burger had no flavor. If one bills themselves as an organic restaurant, how can they start putting canned garbage on their burger? The sweet potato fries were pretty tasty though, however I once again question the term "organic" here. Looked like frozen product to me. Same opinion goes for the onion rings. Two of us ate burgers and soda. She got sweet potato fries, I got onion rings. Was $23 and change. A bit pricy I felt for a tasteless burger. They ring you up and make you pay before you get your food or eat, but they still waited on us for drink refills and such. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to tip in that situation or not. The place is cute, quaint, and clean. I'll give it that. The iron chair backs have a steamy cup of coffee design routed out...somewhat charming. I didn't see the bathroom, so I can't comment there, but I suspect you won't find a "Flush twice, it's a long way to the kitchen." sign dangling above an unkempt urinal or dingy black sink. Would I stop in again to eat? Probably not. It is right next door to my barber, so they may see me again for a hot cup of coffee on my haircut day, but that's it. I could have gotten a mountainous flavor-laden burger with bottomless fries at Red Robin for the same price.

Visited the Snack Shack when strolling around one afternoon. We were greeted with smiles and a warm hello. I immediately felt like this was a local hang out as many people at the bar were chatting it up with each other and the staff. I heard from others in town that this place is under new management since the fall. I can't stomach beef so I tried the veggie burger and loved it. It's ground chickpeas combined with roasted peppers and other veggies. It was well seasoned and had great flavor. I ended up not eating the bun and used a fork for the burger. Loved the onion rings and sweet potato fries. We had a big dinner planned so we didn't try the shakes, but we'll be back and will give those a try. Certainly give this place a try when in town. You'll leave with a full belly and big smile.

Wheat State Pizza is no longer (at this location)... Hello the Shack on Santa Fe! A buddy and I decided to try this place out since we were in the mood for a good burger. I couldn't resist after reading some of the reviews on Yelp. I ordered a single burger, vanilla shake, and onion rings. My companion ordered a double with fries. Burger: The burger was grand. It had a nice crispy outside crunch but not burnt, so it wasn't a mouth full of carbon instead it added flavor and was still quite juicy. I think the only downside is there are not very many options so note it isn't a "create your own burger" place. Shake: The shake I would say was average. Wasn't at all bad, just wasn't great. Sides: The onion rings were good with plenty of fresh onion flavor. There was a peculiar flavor in the breading but nonetheless great, just different. The fries were my least favorite. The color on them was great however I was expecting them to be crispy instead of taking on noodle characteristics. We thought they would make good spaghetti fries. Here are the instructions... 1. Buy fries 2. Poor lots of ketchup on fries and toss randomly like a salad 3. If you didn't already eat it all, break several small chucks that awesome burger for meatballs and place on top of the fries 4. *BAM* you got yourself some spaghetti fries!!! Overall, I honestly think this place is great! The owner seems like a decide guy. They are already getting some good recognition for only being open since September (I believe). He said they serve organic meat and vegetables which is also a plus. Summary: - GREAT burger! It would be nice to have a few more options for toppings/creating your own delicious organic burger - Shake wasn't bad but I wouldn't say it was amazing - I liked the onion rings over the fries. The o-rings did have an interesting/peculiar taste, but I enjoyed it - Cash/check only. Tax is included and creates an even dollar amount - It is a "shack" so limited sitting. Sitting arrangements could be hard for a large group - Great local burger shack that uses organic vegetables and meat. Thumps up!

Did In-N-Out come to KC? Not quite, but as close as I can find. Alright, I have written before my opinion on there being too many burger places in america as it is and usually they pretty much blow with a few exceptions. This is one of those exceptions. I didn't catch the owner's name but he was a personable guy and makes great food. I immediately made the In-N-Out connection on the fries. They are real potatoes never frozen and cooked in a Soy oil. He was concerned about all the kids allergies to peanuts so that is why they didn't go with peanut oil. But seriously those fries are the closest thing to In-N-Out I have had. And that is a good thing. All their product is local except the potatoes. You pretty much have to get them from Idaho. No real potato farmers in Kansas or Missouri. Not surprising really when you consider our soil, but I digress. I was given the choice of grilled or fresh onion so I went with grilled. I told him he really needs to consider doing an animal style burger. He agreed it was something to consider. I haven't even gotten to the shake. So I generally don't get chocolate shakes as everyone puts in a bunch of too sweet corn syrup based chocolate that makes me sick. I observed the color and consistency of another person's shake and decided I was going to do a chocolate. Yep it withstood the Inn-N-Out standard. And he gave me the extra in the tumbler. They have only been open since Sunday and are still ramping up. But I think they are going to make it. I know I will be coming back when it's time for my burger/fry/shake craving. Honestly the room for improvement I can see is perhaps the bun, but it is perfectly acceptable and slightly grilled. Oh and get in the animal style as an offering. Maybe we could call OP style or Shack Shack Style. The meat was ground up today and is never frozen. They only have a small freezer for the ice cream. They are only taking cash and checks right now. Oh and they are putting up artwork/items that people bring in. They are letting the customers decorate the place. *Also, just heard from another source that they will be offering a veggie burger for the vegetarian people out there in the future.

The Shack on Santa Fe is reminiscent of burger shacks that I remember visiting in small town's across Texas when I was a child. Old Downtown Overland Park is a quaint old neighborhood that is a holdover from 75 years ago when OP was just a small Kansas town. The owners freshly make everything. The french fries actually start as whole potatoes and are transformed into fries as you watch. The onion rings are hand cut each day. And the burgers, local Angus beef that is so thick that a double is truly big enough for 2 adults to share! Prices: Single Burgers - $6 Fries - $3 Shakes - $3 It's not the cheapest burger meal around but they are tasty and fresh! The service can be slow, there is no assembly line here so every order seems to be made from start to finish before the next order is started. Expect to wait ~20 minutes. The dining area is small; the place can fit 20 people at the most so if you come during a lunch or dinner rush the Shack can feel very crowded. Cash or Check Only, the Shake doesn't accept credit cards... All in all, The Shack is now one of my regular stops for burgers...

It's getting harder and harder to find a good old fashioned burger joint these days. Everyone wants to serve you 140 different types or beer, exotic toppings, modern designs, home made, or non-beef burgers. Not that I don't enjoy those places, but sometimes a guy just wants a cheeseburger. Nothing more, nothing less. When that's what you want, the Snack Shack is the perfect place for you. Great location to get in and out of, friendly staff, and a small, yet cozy, diner. I finally made the trip today (diet be damned), and ordered a regular cheezeburger with sweet potatoe fries. Both were fantastic, cooked just right, and made in a timely fashion. Just because it's all made to order doesn't mean that it's a slow lunch. I was in and out in less than 30 minutes. You definitely owe it to yourself to try this place out at least once, and you'll get a nostalgic look back at the way dining use to be. 5 star service and food, but the $9.25 total for a burger and fries is a bit steep. I didn't feel cheated by any means, that's just the old man in me remember when you used to get a great lunch for under $5.

It was a quiet Friday evening, when 4 beautiful (and single) ladies stopped in for a burger. What they received was nothing short of the expectations. Each one opted for the Sassy Burger. (I mean...it was quite fitting to our personalities.) And of course they had to order the Sweet Potato fries! There was never a question. This was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Who can say NO to personal and friendly service. No one....no one. Plus, the avocado sealed together a perfect burger with bacon (who doesn't love bacon.) Slowly, the ladies moved to leave. (Slowly, because we were all in a food coma.) However, they all vowed to return to sample the shakes and partake of more sweet potato fries!

Great, friendly customer service! Loved the fresh ingredients. The family each got a Single with cheese. Good rings and fries. The sweet corn nuggets were a major hit. Only drawback, the burgers were a bit dry. I will be back, can't wait to try The Bobby.

My life has been so busy I have rarely been in downtown Overland Park in the past six months. But Saturday after going to the OP City Market my friend and I could not leave the area without having lunch at The Snack Shack! I told her about this great place a few months ago and she eats there weekly. I actually stepped out from my comfort zone (of ordering the same thing each time so it seems) and had The Bobby Burger. Loved it. Loved the heat from the jalapenos. The rest of it was the typical Snack Shack awesomeness! Yummy taste and cooked just right. They were very busy and had sold out of some items. Not surprising since they don't freeze their meat....freshly acquired from Bichelmeyer's every day! Looked like they have hired more help, too. They are now offering a $5.00 meal on Sunday evenings during the FREE concerts in the park right next to them. How nice...they even have the schedule and who's playing on their website. Still the best burger place in Johnson County!

Finally checked this place out after this place out after driving by several times. I certainly wasn't disappointed. I had the veggie burger. which was a hand-made patty with garbanzo beans. Has to be one of the best veggie burgers around. The milk shakes were amaaazing. Definitely a must if you come here. I had vanilla and my wife had strawberry. And yes, they use real strawberry ice cream; not flavored syrup. The place is a quaint store front with bar seating around the perimeter. No tables or booths. I actually think the kitchen is bigger that the dining area. The staff was very friendly and attentive. They like to chat with the regulars that come in. The only thing I would change would be the regular french fries. I heard the sweet potato fries were good, so perhaps that's their specialty. The regular fries were just packaged, frozen fries; nothing special.

I've been meaning to stop in to the Shack Shack for some time now. I recently was rolling through Old OP and popped in here for an early lunch. This place has the feel of a 50's style diner. The owner was in, a very friendly girl that was welcoming from the moment I walked in. I went with their special that day, which was a burger, fries and a soda for $7. I subbed out the fries for sweet potato. Portions were very big, so big I couldn't finish. I liked the sweet potato fries, but I saw them pour them right out of the frozen bag into the fryer, so that was a bit of a disappointment. A little too much salt for my taste, but still good. Bun was awesome, quality of the meat was equally awesome. For a cheat meal off my diet, I'd do it again here.

OK, new owners are awesome and food is really great as well. Love the Bobby Burger (jalapenos were not too hot but not bland, just right) and lots of cheese. My wife really digs the Sassy Burger and of course, our son thinks Nathan's hot dogs rule so, totally good night with everyone getting what they wanted. Conversation is cool at the counter and shakes are very satisfying. Will definitely go back and recommend to friends.

I had to revise my former 5 stars down to 3. I think the ownership must have changed. My first indication of this was the conspicuously missing Texas sign that used to adorn the wall above the cash register. The next indication came in the form of crinkle fries (seems to be a telltale sign of previously frozen food) rather than the former hand-cut fries, and a burger that just wasn't as big and juicy as I remembered it. To top it off, the shakes have been changed from homemade to what seems to be a store brand. Don't get me wrong, this is still a decent burger at a good price. My internal tragedy is that it used to be an exceptional burger and fries - the kind of combo that is hard to find. Perhaps there are reasons for that since this one seems to have changed.....

I drive by this place on a semi regular basis, and it always seemed to be closed (though maybe it was always a Sunday when I drove by). It got to the point I actually thought it was out of business! Yesterday I went by and saw people inside and figured i'd check it out. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and onion rings, since the yelp reviews lauded them (though I now notice that was pre-owner change). It wasn't too busy in there, yet I still waited quite awhile for a burger and rings. However, good food (especially burgers from bickelmeyer's meats!) is worth waiting for, right? Well, good food is worth waiting for. However, what I got was just plain bland. The bacon looked like fast food bacon, but other than that the burger itself looked good, and the rings looked awesome! But once I bit into it, I couldn't taste any sort of flavor. None. It was a letdown to be sure. I did love the space, nice and quaint. But 10 bucks for an unseasoned burger and rings that I waited almost 10 minutes for is pretty lame.

If you've ever wondered whether social coupons can lead someone to try a place and become a frequent patron, wonder no more. My first visit to this ambiguously named restaurant (Snak Shack? Shake Shack?) was spurred by my purchase of a Muncharoo deal. Since then, it's become a huge favorite of my husband's and I'm always happy to go along when he suggests it. Their menu is pretty basic: a few different burgers, a (huge!) hot dog and fries or onion rings. The burgers are very good. The single is plenty for me and the toppings are always fresh and tasty. I'm not quite as big a fan of the homestyle french fries. If they could manage to make them crispy, I'd change my mind, but they're a little floppy for my taste. The onion rings, on the other hand, are superb. They hand-batter them and fry them until the coating is light and crispy. They remind me of tempura-battered onions. I'm generally more of a breaded onion ring fan, but these are so good that they exist in a category of their own. It's a small family-owned place, so you have to be a little flexible about your dining experience. They have a tendency to run out of things depending on the time of day or week. Still, everyone there is so friendly that I've always taken these little ruffles in stride.

Burger was good, fries were super soggy. Onion rings were well cooked for us, a little greasy. Shake was average, but the people running the place were really good to us. It's all local food. Meat is from local farms, as are most of the ingredients. If a guy needs a smoke break, he needs a smoke break! Are we so pampered in this era that we can't have a guy smoke without washing his hands? It's not as if they were emptying out the human waste troughs into the alleyway as the Plague doctors were wheeling bodies out of the dark. This is a small place. I don't know about people taking smoke breaks during lunch rush (it's very hard for me to believe the lone "one-star" Yelper who wrote that). I suggest you go and find out for yourselves. It's a great place!

Locally owned restaurant that offers real meat hamburgers from a local source! The owners are the servers and always friendly and attentive and remember you when you return visit! All hamburgers are MADE EXACTLY TO ORDER -- great dishonor to yelp whiners complaining their hamburger is bland -- like people who made their own stirfry at BD BBQ then complain the food tasted bad. Humbly suggest they should choose a dressing THAT THEY LIKE then rate it. Humbly suggest not to judge wine by barrel it is in. Great family honor!

I just finished my burger, fries, and shake just now. Tasty. There wasn't anyone else there when I was, but a conversation with the owner told me that they had been busy all day. So good for them. You can get a burger and side for $5.00 (which includes tax). Double for $6.00. Hot dog and side for $5.00. A side of french fries or onion rings is $2.00. Shakes and floats are $3.00. Drinks are $1.00. They have some sort of veggie burger too, but I don't remember how much. So prices are very reasonable. After my burger was done, it was loaded with onion rings. A LOT of onion rings. They weren't being shy. The onion rings were good, but didn't totally want to stay together when dipping them in my condiment of choice. The service was great. The owner was nice. He made my shake and then asked if I wanted to start on it, or if I'd like him to put it in the freezer for when my burger was ready. Since I was taking mine to go, I opted for the freezer. He thanked me for coming in, and we got to talking about getting produce from the farmers' market and the struggles with finding organic buns that weren't totally expensive or hard as rocks. He was funny and nice. The place was decorated like a 50s style shake shop, with only counter seating inside. There were many ecclectic posters. I had plenty of time to scope out the place, since they were cooking my burger fresh. So stop on by. It's a nice little place, and it's always nice to support the local guys.

Somebody took me to the best hamburger place ever in old Overland Park called the Shack at 8035 Santa FE. They do have grilled cheese for the vegetarian crowd and, from what I have heard, the greatest shakes around. The most expensive thing on the menu is the Bobby Burger ($6.75) which you should never get because it is a double cheese burger with lettuce, tomato and jalapeno peppers. A single cheeseburger will do. The place is thoughtfully located on the edge of a city park and across the street from a funeral home for the Bobby Burger fans. A great place!

One of the best burgers in KC! The onion rings are to die for and the service is the best. Down to earth, real people cookin' for ya. If you like a good burger this is a must visit .... and you'll want to visit more than once.

I visited The Shack on a Saturday evening, identifying it as the lone beacon of light at the edge of old downtown OP next to a row of stores that probably closed at 6 pm on the weekdays. If not for word of mouth and good ol' Yelp, there's no way I would've known about this cute little place. I'm not a huge burger lover, but I'll enjoy one every now and again, preferably from somewhere better than McDonald's but not as expensively mediocre as Red Robin. I hoped this would live up to its hype of being an inexpensive, awesome place to find a burger. A lot of people called this place on par with or better than Five Guys. Before I first tried Five Guys, I kept hearing stories that it was the best burger hands down and when I tried it I was a little disappointed. Tasty burger, but I didn't find anything special about it. With The Shack the burger was indeed tastier than Five Guys, but again, my mind didn't explode into a billion pieces. Then again, maybe I just don't like burgers all that much. On the other hand, the vegetables did taste really fresh and I could tell a huge difference. All in all, though, it was a pretty simple and tasty burger. Chatted with the owners for a couple minutes, who said that this was their first time in the restaurant biz. It showed a bit, as they had some technical difficulties (soda machine wasn't working, out of chocolate shakes, maybe something else), but they were really friendly and apologetic, and I wasn't off put by any of that. After all, they were pretty darn busy. They also said their beef was farm-raised and grass-fed from Tonganoxie, so it was nice to know where my food was coming from for once and nice to be able to watch them preparing the food. I was hoping for super awesome fries and onion rings as well, but I think Five Guys would win the award for better fries. Both were tasty, but the grease was heavy. Either way, it was nice to see them cutting their own fries and making everything to order. However, based on friendliness, freshness and overall flavor I was really happy with this place and look forward to returning in the future.

This is what burgers are supposed to taste like. Too often the burger, a thing of simple perfection, finds itself falling victim to over complication or even worse, mass production. The Shake Shack proudly serves what fast food joints have long since forgotten and burger boutiques often overlook; a basic burger done right. Fresh ground beef. Never frozen. Cooked to perfection on a flat top with just the right amount of seasoning. Fresh burger veggies. Cheese. A basic, if not perfect bun. What more do your need? Fries are fresh cut. Seriously, when's the last time you had fresh cut fries? The onion rings are heavenly. Fresh onion, perfect seasoning. Are you beginning to see a pattern here? Perhaps the most impressive thing about The Shake Shack? Value! $5 for a burger (decent sized patty, not just a sliver of meat) and either fries or onion rings. $3 more for a handmade shake. Total $8, and that includes tax. This is not to be understated, $8 total for a fresh handmade burger, fresh handmade fries or onion rings, and a fresh handmade shake. Same meal, except mass produced with various fillers and preservatives at a fast food joint; $6-$8. The one downfall at the shack? Efficiency. The staff consists of only the two owners who are married and extremely friendly. Two sets of hands producing completely handmade meals results in very slow service. The good news; this is completely solvable. Either add one more set of hands, or develop a more efficient system. Both are achievable and will likely result in 5 star ratings across the board. Do yourself a favor, go! Go and remind yourself of what a burger is supposed to be.

Some guys at work were talking about going to 5 guys today. My colleague and I who had gone to The Shack last week convinced them to try The Shack instead. They weren't disappointed; 1 said it was at least as good as 5 guys, but needed more choice of additional toppings. I overheard another raving about it to some other folks back at the office. I'm inclined to agree on the additional toppings, having things like grilled mushroom, jalapenos available would be great, I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for them either. The addition of malt vinegar for the fries would be great too (that's my English heritage coming through I guess). 2 disappointments; They were out of onion rings. The fries were a little over cooked this time (an attempt to get them crispy would be my guess). Burger was a 4-4.5 again!! They still get a 3 overall though, because of the onion rings and fries.

I'm not entirely convinced that the tomato on my burger was local, organic, and sustainable. It's the middle of October, and tomato season is behind us. However, even if it was somehow a local organic product, I just don't see how that's going to be possible in February. Are they going to take tomatoes off the table when they have to be unsustainably trucked in from more equatorial climes? I didn't ask, because the woman behind the counter was getting completely slammed with customers, but I will next time I'm in. Oh, and there will be a next time, despite my lingering questions about which components are local, organic, and sustainable. After all, while I certainly appreciate those attributes, I'm more concerned about whether the burger is good. The burger is good. No, the burger is great. Simple, no frills, nothing fancy. No red wine braised short ribs, no aiolis brushed onto brioche, no brie or lobster tail. Those things are fine, too, but this isn't that. This is, in fact, the antithesis of that. Fries are hand cut to order. Onion rings are hand battered to order. Burgers are hand-smashed on the griddle to order. And they're all really good. It's too bad that the rings and fries are not perfect. The ring batter has some minor flaws, and the fries suffer a bit for not being subjected to the tried and true double-fry method. But they're both good, and in any case, the sheer awesomeness of the burgers make these flaws seem like minor niggles. There's just something about juicy, perfectly seasoned and expertly griddled ground beef that makes everything else seem inconsequential, and that's exactly what Shake Shack serves.

I'm w/ Bill... In-N-Out in KC? Hell yea!!! I had the double basket w/ onion rings... I can honestly say they may quite possibly be the best onion rings I have ever had. Burger... Fresh hand made cooked on a griddle... It was so juicy and delicious I almost ate my napkin... AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!

Tasty little burger joint in downtown OP (former home of Wheat State Pizza). Meat is ground fresh, fries and rings are made to order. It was all a bit greasy, but so are some of the best burger joints in the world. They are new -- and it shows. Working out some kinks and they could unquestionably use better and/or more seating. All in all, our posse enjoyed every bite and we'll be back. One last word to the wise -- they are cash only - for the time being.

The painting on the windows says "Local, Organic, Sustainable", 3 words that excite hipsters and recycling friendly suburbanites like no other. I'm only interested in if it tastes good. I was heartened to see whole potatoes laying around the grill area as I walked in the door meaning they're cutting their own fries. If a place is cutting their own fries they're taking a giant step towards being a really good restaurant. As soon as the 2 ladies in line in front of me placed their burger orders, I saw the grill man reach in the fridge, grab 2 balls of hamburger and flatten them on the grill. Made to order burgers, another step in the right direction. When I looked at the menu, I marveled at the simplicity of a six item menu. Single basket, double basket, veggie basket, fries, onion rings, shakes/floats, there was beauty in the simplicity. I ordered a single basket and was confronted with the question "fries or rings", I froze. To which the counter guy (who I'm pretty sure is the owner) said "we can also do a fifty/fifty". Sold. I inquired what kind of shakes they had, only chocolate and vanilla on this day but they usually have strawberry. The owner was surprised at how quickly the strawberry shakes sold. He could have sold one more, but I had to have chocolate instead. Do you want to go here if you're in a big hurry? Probably not, it takes a couple minutes to cook your burger. But, you're at least entertained a little bit by the owner who is a pretty happy guy. He's happy to tell you to bring in some art to hang on the walls. He's happy to talk to the customers. He's probably pretty happy because he owns a pretty cool little burger place. He's happy to let you put the trojan helmet on that's laying around on the counter. It's not a really organized system they're running over there, but they keep it fun and loose. A little happiness around makes the wait much more bearable. I got my burger to go but I very easily could have eaten it there. They have a couple of tables outside where you can look through the park and see the historic carriage house. Or you can sit at one of the 8 barstools in the restaurant if the weather isn't to your liking. I brought my burger home and unwrapped it and was a little disappointed in the look of my fries and rings. I tried a fry and it was a bit soggy like it wasn't rinsed before it was fried. The onion rings were obviously hand cut and battered and, while inconsistent in thickness, were well cooked. The burger was stacked with some lettuce, a thick slice of tomato and enough diced onions for 4 burgers at any place. The Shake Shack promises that all of these items are locally grown, including the beef. I'm not sure if that means they won't have tomatoes in the winter or if they'll have South American tomatoes or what. I don't get locavorism, but I do know that all the toppings were delicious (my son ate the tomato). The burger taste was quite beefy with very few other flavors. If you like a simple burger like you'd get at a family picnic, the Shake Shack has the burger for you. I had to throw a couple of dashes of Tabasco and some ketchup on to make it good, your taste may vary. I will say they don't scrimp on throwing in condiment packets in your to go bag. I left the mustard and mayo packets there. With some salt on the fries and rings, everything was quite satisfactory. It was a good $5 lunch, $8 with a shake which was also good but a little ordinary. The biggest compliment I can give a place is to say I ate every bite and I ate every bite of my Shake Shack lunch.

I took my group buy coupon and roomie in tow. Roomie absolutely loved her meal of double double and fries. I was not thrilled with the fries and was glad I got the onion rings instead. Also the menu changes sometimes. I got a burger that was not on the picture menu on here. My burger was great. Not really a fan of stools to sit on to eat, but there's no room in here. I might suggest a foot bar under the tables. I had to rest mine on roomie's stool and eat sideways. I wanted to try a shake but I knew it have to be another day for sure.

Local. Organic. Sustainable. Some admirable and desirable characteristics for restaurateurs and foodies alike. This is seemingly Shake Shack's niche (I can't recall any other burger joints in the metro that can also make this claim). Overall, some fairly tasty burgers, fries, and o-rings to be had here. It's not particularly my "style" of burger per se (see Five Guys), but I would encourage anyone to give the Shack a try, as I can definitely see this place appealing to the masses. Especially being in such close proximity to the downtown OP farmer's market crowd. I think they really hit the nail on the head as far as choosing the best possible location to open this business. The burger patties are on the thin side (order a double if you want a "thick" burger) and the fries and o-rings are uber oily and soft (not a bad thing). I didn't dabble in a milk shake, but I would love to try one at some point (without bringing all the boys to the yard).

I bought the single burger, and I was surprised on the size. They had fresh vegetables and meat was really good. I liked how it was a little burnt on the outside like it was cooked on the grill. I also ordered the onion rings and those were pretty good. It was very light. It had a light coating. Probably the only down side of the experiment was that it was a little small and that they only accept cash.

My kids love this joint! My son wants to go every week. It is super fun, and the people are incredibly nice. The owners will remember you, and it has a really "local" feel to it. No, it is not as cheap as a chain fast food joint, and no it is not gourmet. But it is locally-owned, friendly, and pretty good for burgers and fries. The cheese sandwich is delicious processed cheese yum! The burger is generous, and the veggie burger is pretty damn good. The fries are frozen, but they are crisp. The shakes are generous and made to order. When weather permits, the seating outside is nice.

These burgers were SO good. Just the patty alone was one of the best I'd ever had. I got the Sassy which was delicious! Give me avocado and I'm a happy girl. The chocolate shake was very old-school and so yummy, as were the fries and onion rings. It's the perfect fit for downtown OP. I can't wait to go back!

I had a chance to talk to the owner just a few days after this place opened, yet it still took me this long to get in to try it. It's unfortunate that my own work hours mirrored the hours of this store, because I have solid and palpable regret at having not stopped in sooner. As mentioned already, the produce is local and organic, as well as the beef being delivered fresh daily. High-quality ingredients go into every aspect, so though the finished product may not appear to be a thing of beauty, the taste more than makes up for it. The burgers are juicy and flavorful, and the owner/cook is just as willing to serve you a still-moving medium rare patty as he is cooking it to an extra well, to suit the tastes of those who would rather forget they're eating a formerly breathing being. Though on this first visit I limited myself for fiscal reasons, I know I enjoyed what I tried and I know I will be back for more, ESPECIALLY living within 2 miles of the place. As I happily stuffed another onion ring into my mouth, I turned to my mother and stated that this is, indeed, the kind of food I'd less mind getting fat off of. (Though of course I wouldn't let THAT happen)

Just had lunch here today. I tried the cheeseburger and sweet potato fries and my boyfriend had the double with onion rings and we split a chocolate shake. The burgers were good. If the meat is from Bickelmeyers then it's quality meat. They were bigger than we had anticipated. We thought the fries and onion rings were tasty but thought the wait was a bit long for a burger. The sweet potato fries were served with ranch dressing which made for a unique dipping sauce. The chocolate shake was nothing to write home about and will probably forgo it next time. Cute, local place though and we will be back.

I went to The Shack because it's the only place I can find in the Overland Park/Olathe/Lenexa area that has organic grass fed beef. I tried the burger and the onion rings. Burger was great. Onion rings - not so much. I see everyone on Yelp raves about them, but they were just greasy and nasty. I mean, they were literally soaked in grease it seemed. Not like usual onion rings. I'd go back for the burger but skip the rings.

The owner and staff are very friendly here. I like that they buy locally grown produce and meat. The food is tasty at The Shack, but you should know that they do insist on cooking every burger "well done." Our onion rings were also well done, but still had a really good flavor. The fries were yummy too. I think the best thing about this place is straight up simplicity: a few classics done well and served with old fashioned friendliness.

The bugrer was very good. I definitely prefer this burger to the corporate-but-good bugers from places like Winstead's or Five Guys. I don't think the prices are that great. For that money, I could get a wider variety of food at one of those chinese buffets (when I eat unhealthy, I like plenty of fruit and vegetables to balance everything out. You can get that at a buffet but not a burger joint.) $10 bucks for a lunch of this quality is steep in my opinion. Many have liked the rings. I did not. It got a very strong taste similar to an Indian pakora (deep-fried fritter) elsewhere on the menu they use chickpea flour in the veggie burger and I think that, plus familar spices were what I detected. Rings too greasy, fries were limp and soggy. It's such a shame because it appears as though they are going to the trouble of cutting the fries fresh. I wanted to climb back there and show them how to double fry. It's not hard and really would add next no time to their order fulfillment (which was kinda long for a burger place). Most importantly, that is the only way to have a superior house made french fry (Oklahoma Joes, even Wyandot BBQ on 75th Street are very good) Excellent burger. Rings and Fries not consistent with burger quality. Too expensive for the uneven quality of the entire meal. If you can skip the sides. This is the place.

Burger was really good but WAYYY TOO EXPENSIVE! fries were not good at all, they were $2 too for a medium sized portion. I spent $11 on a double cheeseburger, fries, and drink. It has a diner atmosphere but the staff seemed very sketchy to be completely honest. I'm not going back again

The food was good and the place was very busy - not enough seating. They only take cash though and the lady with blonde hair and glasses working the counter was a complete rag!! She was very irritated if anyone didn't realize they were cash only - she let two different parties leave without pointing out there was an ATM machine right behind them. She never said thank you to us - just handed us our food. I will never eat there again because of her rudeness.

I made a trip to the Shake Shack due to the rave reviews of fellow Yelpers. Needless to say, they have it ALL wrong. I ordered a cheeseburger, onion rings and a shake. Simple right? NOPE... The place was busy, but it took over 25 minutes of waiting to get my order. The staff had no sense of urgency whatsoever. Finally the order came.... First, the onion rings were swimming in a pool of grease and they were burnt black to a crisp. Threw them away. Oh well, at least the burger might be good...NOPE! The meat was burnt as well and had absolutely no flavor. Tasted like McDonald's, except Micky's would have been better. The shake was made of some off brand cheap ice milk and was awful. You should have seen the milk shake blender, it was a non commercial home version that about caught on fire while they tried to pump out a couple of shakes. One thing that really grossed me out was when I noticed that the cook and owner went out back to take a smoke a cigarette in the middle of rush hour. Come on - stay inside and don't let the food burn! They took a few quick drags and came back in without washing their hands. Glad the health inspector wasn't there. Sorry, this is just unacceptable and gross. DON'T waste your time or money here. I just suspect that the other reviews are from personal friends who are trying to be nice.

I decided to try this place when I drove by today and was searching for something to pick up for lunch. I'm all for local and organic so I thought what the heck, let's give it a try. As a loyal yelp subscriber, I decided to check on some reviews first. The feedback was mixed but I looked past it and walked in. The menu is basic and written on a blackboard with the words "single", "double", hot dog", "fries", etc. I assumed the guy behind the counter would say "hi, have you been here before" and offer some assistance. Instead, he just looked at me (with his Greatful Dead t-shirt on) and I thought I would keep my order simple - A single with cheese and an order of fries. I sat down and read the newspaper until my food was ready. They placed it in a brown paper bag and set it on the counter. Again, no talking. It would have been nice to hear "here you go" or "thanks" or some recognition that I was there to help keep this place open. The burger was reminiscent of five guys. Pretty good quality but I kept thinking in the back of my mind about another reviewer who said they found raw meat in their fries. The only thing I didn't expect was lettuce, onions and pickles (because I didn't order them) but I guess they are standard although you wouldn't know it because there's NO REAL MENU. The fries, on the other hand, were awful. A soggy boat of skin-on potatoes with absolutely no flavor. I had to use ketchup to get any of the fries down my throat and I probably would have thrown the entire order away had I not been starving. I would say don't waste your time on this place and either go to the real five guys or go a couple of blocks over and settle for winsteads.

This place was closed. It has since re-opened under new management and is once again super tasty. They will tell you all about where there meat comes from, which is nice. The double burger is pretty big, but it doesn't seem as large as it was before, as I was able to down it with no problem. I highly recommend. Awesome locally owned burger place. The burgers take a little longer than fast food, but are totally worth it.

Great little place with excellent burgers and very attentive service. These people deserve to do well because they're trying to do everything right and their product(s) is super. If you love a tasty burger with fries or onion rings, I would highly recommend The Shake Shack.

Burger or Hamburger is savored as the most desired fast food meal in the United States. A hamburger is basically a sandwich prepared by stuffing ground meat patty, generally beef, between two slices of a bun cut in half. Hamburger is also famous for its seasoning. Most popular condiments used in hamburgers in the United States are mustard, mayonnaise, and ketchup. Besides ground meat patty, hamburgers are also stuffed with lettuce, onions, tomato slices, pickles, and cheese.
